Google Glass

Google Glass made big headlines last year when they launched their "Explorer Program" and made the glasses available to a select few.  They have now expanded their program, opening to the general public on May 15th, 2014.

Earlier this year, they added the feature of integrating prescription lenses into Google Glass frames, and our office was excited to participate and be a Google Glass provider.  Although the prescription does have limits of approximately +4.00 to -4.00; this was a big step in allowing more people to be able to wear and use Google Glasses.

Recently, it has come to light that Google Glass wearers have been complaining of eye strain and headaches while wearing the glasses.  Google even brought in a Harvard optometrist, Dr. Eli Peli, to consult on the ocular discomfort, and what he found makes perfect sense to me.

The way Google Glass is designed, it displays the images in the top upper right hand corner of the lens.  This design forces you to look up and to the right and was placed in this position to not interfere with your normal field of view.

Unfortunately, this is also not a normal position to hold your eye in and can lead to discomfort.  Luckily, the pain tends to subside within a weeks time as the eye muscles get used to being used more in that direction.  It is advised to limit your use at first and to gradually build up your time of wearing Google Glass.

Have you tried Google Glass yet?  If so, please tell us about your experience.

Our office is excited to be offering Google Glass prescription lenses and look forward to helping you with all of your eye care needs!

Reviews From Our Satisfied Patients

  • "We use Anderson Optometry for all of our family’s vision needs. Recently, we had to have our youngest fitted for new glasses and he made the experience fun for her and informative for us. We know Dr. Anderson will always take good care of our family’s eye care and that’s why we wouldn’t go to anywhere else."

  • "Dr. Anderson and his staff are so patient and friendly. Dr. Anderson prescribed me glasses and I had the toughest time picking out frames. They didn’t rush, but instead made helpful suggestions and now I have an awesome pair of frames, not to mention the fact that I can see ten times better than before. You guys are the best!"
